Lilli (Judy Davis) a back up singer for an Elvis Presley imitator called Lester (Frankie , lives an aimless life on the edge of show business. Strong-minded and independent, she is also alone and lost, drifting to escape commitment.
When her small troupe comes to town to do a show, she expects it to be just another routine country gig but Lester tells Lilli that she is no longer wanted in the group and she f, no job, no money and nowhere to go.
She meets an adolescent surfie kid, Ally (Claudia Karvan), in the local caravan park and they become friendly.
Ally, who is trying to grow up and find her place in the world, lives with Bet (Jan Adele), her grandmother, a gutsy, stern survivor who works in a factory and sings at the local club every Saturday night.
Lilli is shocked to see Bet, for it forces her to confront the fact that Ally is the daughter she abandoned as an infant after her husband died.
